Fall 2021 Varsity Update
Men’s and Women’s Rugby and Soccer suspended for the fall 2021 term.
Published: July 7, 2021With the fall semester fast approaching and the continued modification and remote delivery of many programs at Algonquin College, the Algonquin Students’ Association had to make a difficult decision regarding the fall varsity sports season.
At the deadline for determining student fees, due to the uncertain nature of the fall semester, the SA could not support billing all students a fee for varsity programming that may or may not happen. For this reason, we have decided to continue the current suspension of varsity Men’s and Women’s Rugby and Soccer in the fall. In the coming months, a Men’s and Women’s Basketball and Volleyball decision for the winter term will be made and announced.
The SA is preparing to open the Jack Doyle Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) this fall. We are looking forward to safely welcoming students back to indoor fitness and recreation programs. We are encouraged by increasing COVID-19 vaccination rates in our community and the ongoing provincial reopening plan. This reopening plan allows us to focus on a safe and gradual opening of the ARC for recreation, athletics, and wellness programs.
We are looking forward to a time when it is safe to resume in-person opportunities for students to engage in physical activity that supports their well-being, builds connections, and enriches their student experience.
We understand the importance of varsity sports to the Algonquin College community, and we believe that team sports are a crucial part of the college experience for many people. We are excited to bring the Rugby and Soccer teams back to Algonquin in the fall of 2022. We also know this decision affects many in our community. Support is available by contacting Algonquin College Counselling Services or emailing welcomecentre@algonquincollege.com. We are committed to providing students opportunities to live an active and healthy lifestyle, and we hope to see more and more students back on campus in the winter term.
