Interview with Cat Coleman

SA Director Cat Coleman talks about her experience seeking nomination for the SA Board of Directors.

Published: December 1, 2021

Cat Coleman, a second-year student in the Social Service Worker program, was elected to the Algonquin Students’ Association (SA) Board of Directors in the spring of 2021. Coleman, along with seven peers, governs the SA through policy governance, and connects with students in Ottawa, Pembroke, and Perth to learn what students want and need from Algonquin College.

Coleman chose to seek nomination for the SA Board of Directors to be a part of the change she saw happening around her. “I had no idea about the inner workings of how a Board operates and had little experience working with policy – but I did have an intense passion for leadership and inspiring change. I knew the Board was the place to accomplish that,” Coleman said.

Coleman has fond memories when asked about the nomination and selection period – running from late November until March. “It was fun, exciting, nerve-wracking…so many emotions all at once! I really enjoyed getting the endorsement signatures – it led to some great conversations with students, and I got an insight into what was and wasn’t working for them. Looking back, getting those signatures was great preparation for what was to come.”

To become a candidate for election, students must be studying full-time in a fall-intake program, have at least a 2.25 GPA, and receive endorsement signatures from 50 other full-time Algonquin College students.

Once elected by her peers, Coleman was chosen to serve the Board not only as a Director but also as the Elections Officer. It is her job to oversee a fair and equitable election for the 2022/2023 academic year. Coleman and a selection committee of other current Directors will connect with this year’s candidates and interview them to build a slate of eight candidates they will recommend for the next SA Board of Directors. Once the recommended Board is selected, they will have to become elected by the SA membership – full-time Algonquin College students.

Coleman has some specific advice for students who are nominated for the SA Board of Directors this year – “enjoy the process! We are here to help and support you along the way. Reach out with any questions and remember – we all have the same mission: to create an environment that inspires a passion for student success. Keep that in mind, and you’ll be fine!”

During their term in office, SA Directors work closely with students on each campus and Algonquin College leaders and executives. Of her time in office, Coleman says: “I’ve really enjoyed visiting the College’s three campuses. Each campus is so unique, and I’m able to learn about programs offered that I didn’t even know existed! Professionally I have learned so much. I have received quite a bit of training and have been fortunate enough to serve on multiple committees within the College. I’ve been in situations that were challenging and required me to think openly and objectively.”

Directors are an essential part of the Algonquin College community and are involved in policy changes and decisions affecting generations of Algonquin College students.
